The short-lived journal The Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine (1997-2001) has some interesting articles available online, including an excellent essay by Ray Hyman entitled ‘The mischief-making of ideomotor action’. Ideomotor action (unconscious muscle movement in response to expectation), is responsible for some phenomena that people may interpret as paranormal, such as the movement of the planchette on a ouija board. Hyman also illustrates how ideomotor action lies behind several modern-day ‘alternative’ procedures such as ‘facilitated communication’ and ‘applied kinesiology’. The journal also has papers on chiropractic subluxation and quantum metaphysics. An archive of the 2000-2001 contents is here. And an older contents list, including link to Hyman’s paper, is here.
