On impolite students, parapsychology, and p-values. An in-depth interview with Prof Jessica Utts

uttsProfessor Jessica Utts is Professor and Chair of Statistics at UC Irvine, and President Elect of the American Statistical Association. A clear communicator and excellent teacher, she wrote Seeing Through Statistics while on a Sabbatical year at KPU. She has recently published the textbook Mind on Statistics. Utts is an important figure in parapsychology, having brought her statistical expertise to bear in evaluating the US govt-funded Stargate program. She is also prominent in raising the profile of replication and meta-analysis issues in parapsychology. Utts recently gave a fascinating interview to Allan Rossman, for the Journal of Statistics Education. The interview reveals Utts’ great strengths as an educator and communicator. I think this particularly becomes evident when she encourages the reader to consider how they themselves would answer the more generic interview questions. The interview is online here.
